Yesterday, Anna and I played hooky from school and headed up to Colonial Williamsburg. Would you believe that I've never been before our recent 2 trips??? I've lived here my whole childhood and we never went! We went to Yorktown and Jamestown but never Williamsburg. The reason might lie in the price of a ticket! We found out just how expensive they were when we went to go pick up our FREE tickets (to active duty military and veterans)on Sunday. We had free admission to the Governor's Palace, the Capitol, City Life and the Public Hospital which is now a folk art museum. We spent about 3.5 hours there on Sunday but didn't have much time since we went after church. We thought (wrongly) that Reed had Monday off so we hatched a plan to go back the next day. We did see the Governor's Palace, did the maze, walked around the gardens, peeked into a few shops and watched the drummers and fife players practice along with a small regiment of the militia. I didn't have my camera with me though and was so heart broken! Then we headed home thinking that we would all be able to go back the next day. Unfortunately, Reed was called in on Monday and so he was not able to go back with us. I had to work for an hour or so and then off we went. We spent a ton of time in the Public Hospital which is now the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. There we read a book about a dog named Prince, colored pictures and learned about the kinds of toys children Anna's age used to play with. The day we got our tickets, an older lady was helping us (as in old enough to be my grandmother) and she made a big deal over the toy area because there are doll houses on display. She played it up so much that Anna was expecting a really interactive kind of area and was sorely disappointed. We also toured the tiny exhibit that displays what living in that hospital would've been like. From there, we made our way over to the Capitol and took the tour there. Anna was bored stiff and quite honestly, this tour was not quite as exciting as the Palace tour. We took some pictures and watched the Colonial citizens of Williamsburg as they went about their life. We watched some men prepare to fire the canon, a man playing the fife, a militia man trying to teach children how to be in the army and a woman knitting. I think we even passed the General's wife- Mrs. Martha Washington. We peeked in a few more stores and even tried on a hat or two. We also had a ginger ale and a chocolate chip cake which is really what we would call a cookie. We had a great time and I hope we get to opportunity to go again! It's so amazing to live in a place with so much rich history. Thank you Colonial Williamsburg for honoring the military and its vets and allowing us to visit. It was wonderful!
